Japanese Millet
(Echinochloa esculenta)
Japanese Millet is a favorite ingredient in various finch and budgie seed mixes. It is used as an Austerity seed in in mixes created for Lady Gouldians and other Australian finches, though is often favored by African finches as well.
Due to its tiny internal kernel and hard exterior shell, it is an excellent seed to force the birds to work hard to hull their seeds. The work involved in cracking the hull to get to the kernel means the birds must slow down when eating, therefore effectively eat less.
It does NOT make a good weaning millet for chicks. The hull is far too hard for their tiny, inexperienced beaks.
Our White Proso Millet or Premium California Spray Millet would be better choices for weaning chicks.
(Another species commonly called Japanese millet is Echinochloa frumentacea, and is more commonly referred to as “billion-dollar grass”)
