THE ECLECTUS PARROT
By Dr Rob Marshall & Tailai O’Brien
Dr Rob Marshall’s much anticipated formative work on the Eclectus Parrot is here! This pioneering study has taken 20 years to complete and is broadly divided into two halves. The first half describes each sub-species and species in detail and examines the wild diet and breeding behaviour of the Australian Eclectus Parrot, with an applied focus towards companion bird care as well as conservation-based aviculture.
The second half is co-authored by bird behaviouralist, Tailai O’Brien, and dedicated to the stewardship of Eclectus Parrots kept as companion birds. It includes comprehensive nutritional and dietary information applicable to a wide variety of frugivorous (fruit-eating) parrot species as well as instructions regarding mealtime preparation, daily routines and advanced training methods.
The final sections are directed towards avian veterinarians and curious owners. The causes and treatment for the most perplexing parrot diseases and behavioural disorders are unravelled through an innovative and integrative approach to health. These multifactorial diseases have complex links between nutrition, gastrointestinal motility, reproductive behaviour and feather destruction behavioural disorders. The diagnosis, treatment and prevention of each of these notable diseases of Eclectus Parrots are described in detail.
With an appeal to a wide audience, this book offers frontier knowledge in avian medicine and companion bird care and is a must have for parrot owners, avian veterinarians, aviculturalists and conservationists.
