Diatomaceous Earth, sometimes referred to as Fossil Shell Flower, can have many applications in your aviary. Most often it is used as an ORGANIC way to control insects in the aviary and internal parasites in the digestive tract of your birds. Diatomaceous Earth works by PHYSICAL action and contains no chemicals so there is no harm to your birds, pets or humans.

Diatomaceous Earth is the fossilized remains of Diatoms, a type of microscopic, hard-shelled algae. These plants inhabit all the waters of the earth and serve as the basic food for aquatic life. The shell particles of DE are sharp enough to cut the outer layer of the insects and parasites and then the DE absorbs the lipids from the waxy layer of exoskeleton, causing the insect to dehydrate.

● DE can be dusted inside of nestboxes to control ants, spiders and mites

● DE can be lightly dusted onto the bird’s feathers to kill mites and lice, however I would  suggest covering the bird’s head when doing this to prevent inhalation of the DE.

● DE can be mixed into seed to control seed moths and other bugs at a rate of 1 cup per 50# of seed. This seed would then be safe to feed to the birds.

● DE can be dusted around the birdroom floors to control crawling insects. It is also safe to dust in your kitchen cupboards or pantry to control any pests that might be lurking there.

● DE makes an excellent blood coagulant when applied to the end of a bleeding toenail that has been clipped too short.

PRECAUTIONS:

●DE has a drying effect on skin if handled without gloves

● Wearing a dust mask is recommended when DE powder is dusted over large areas
