Canary Grass Seed
(Phalaris canariensis)
A staple food for Canaries & Gouldian finches, Canary Grass Seed is a highly nutritious seed that comes from canary grass. While it used to be a tropical seed that grew wild in many Mediterranean regions, it is now grown throughout North America (Mostly Saskatchewan, ON Canada). Canary seed is a prime staple for canaries and other birds and is named after the Canary Islands, not the bird.
Phalaris canariensis resembles Phalaris arundinacea (reed canary grass), a perennial forage crop and a wild grass. Although heads of both crops are panicles, Phalaris canariensis heads resemble club wheat.
Basic Nutritional Composition of Canary Grass Seed:
When it comes to the composition of minerals, canary grass seed can be compared to oats. The seed's caryopsis (dry, seed-like fruit produced by the grass) has a higher amount of phosphorus, oil, and ash. 100 grams of canary seed groats contain 2.16 g of ash, 5.59 g of oil, and about 583 mg of phosphorus. The caryopses also contain the eight essential amino acids, in larger concentrations than wheat or corn.
