Small amounts of charcoal can be offered to your birds on a regular basis. It is an excellent avian digestive aid, which can deactivate toxins produced by pathogenic bacteria in the gut. Charcoal is not meant to be a food source and has no nutritional benefit, so use it sparingly because some birds will “pig out” on charcoal and cause black droppings which could be interpreted as a disease.
