…excited
and somewhat overwhelmed by the results!
By Patrick O’Rourke
I am a Budgerigar breeder in Adelaide, Australia. After purchasing and reading Dr. Marshall’s new book, The Budgerigar, I decided to put his dietary suggestions in place with my own flock of Budgerigars. I have been religiously giving all of my birds the food and water supplements in preparation to breeding and during.
On March 1st, I put 20 pairs down to breed of which 13 pairs have so far produced 67 chicks. Those that didn’t breed were re-paired to new partners and are currently on 5-6 eggs per pair. The photo at right shows a new box of seven chicks born to a ‘08 Lacewing Hen and a ‘09 Normal Grey Cock bird. In their previous round together last Spring they produced only 2 chicks.
This next photo features a nest box of six chicks and their father, a ‘02 Blue Spangle, who came to me when I purchased an Aviary and the owners asked me to keep him. He was paired with a first timer Albino Hen. This would not be an ideal pairing for exhibition quality offspring, but I thought it would give him one last chance, as he has never bred in my previous attempts to use him. If successful, I thought she would benefit from the experience for future breeding.
This is a 28 day old youngster from the current breeding season.
